Over the Long Term...
Just leave them alone! The deep planting recommended on these pages should enable the clumps to be left in place indefinitely. If there is any drop-off in bloom, fertilize while in growth once or twice during the growing season with whatever you use on your other flowers. The effect will be seen in the following year. Sprinkling fireplace ashes every now and then is always worth doing.

At least a minimal amount of weed control while bulbs are in growth is desirable -- occasional renewal of mulches is helpful for this.   Large species of weeds should be removed, smaller species are not a problem, as bulbs grow among low weeds in the natural habitat.
